Aveiro City Council at the Cities for Europe – Cooperation Meeting

Câmara Municipal de Aveiro took part in the Cities For Europe – Cooperation Meeting, in Berlin, which had as it’s subject 30 Years After the Fall of the Wall: Europe from the “bottom-up”

This meeting celebrated the fall of the Berlin’s wall 30th anniversary and was held along with the State of Europe Speech, by the President of the European Commission, gathering policy makers of European cities, representatives of several European organisms, NGO’s and international experts in the economical, cultural and social fields.

Aveiro was represented by it’s mayor, José Ribau Esteves, one of the guests of a public discussion entitled Europe from the bottom up: the joint responsibility of the basis for the success of Europe. In his intervention, beyond a brief presentation of Aveiro, the mayor exhorted the Europeans to stop the debate about Brexit, to stop talking about who’s leaving the European Union and to intensify the debate about who’s in the European Union making more and better for Europe and it’s citizens. In the same frame, Aveiro’s city hall was also invited to participate in a panel called Cultural and Democratic development strategy for European cities through the instrument of European Capital of Culture, being represented again by it’s mayor and his Cultural Advisor, José Pina.

 Being the only portuguese city at the event, this participation honors Aveiro and is particularly relevant, considering it’s participants and the entities represented, along with the possibility it gave to share Aveiro’s perspectives, strategies and objectives regarding culture’s role in the development of it’s territory, in the promotion of a more active citizenship and in the essential support to the construction of and European identity and it’s democratic values.
